Research with AI Without Losing the Source Trail

Separate discovery, summaries and citations so every important conclusion can be traced to the original material.
Define the question and scope
Write down the question, time range and source types you need. For a product decision, official documentation, original research and user feedback are different kinds of evidence. A clear research plan gives the tool a specific job.
Use search to build a reading list
Perplexity can explore web sources; Elicit and Consensus focus on academic material. Treat their results as reading entry points. Record the original title, author, date and URL. A citation attached to a summary does not necessarily support the entire sentence.
Bring suitable sources into your notes
Gemini Notebook can organize questions around selected sources. Before importing, check whether a source is suitable. Extraction differs for web pages, PDFs and video transcripts, and does not mean the entire website or every detail in a video was read. Keep your notes separate from the original text.
Check three things
First, does the original reach the same conclusion? Second, under what conditions do the information or experiment apply? Third, is there contrary evidence or a newer version? For papers, read the methods, sample and limitations rather than combining results from unlike conditions.
Deliver the evidence trail
Attach the most direct source to each important conclusion, add the access date and distinguish the source's conclusion from your inference. If evidence is insufficient, state the gap. AI can speed up organization, but the researcher remains responsible for the final choices and citations.
