Run a Small Pilot Before Adding an AI Coding Assistant

AIWaylo Editorial · 2026-10-28

Use a reversible change to test code understanding, diff quality, verification and data boundaries.

Start with a reversible problem

Choose work with a clear outcome, such as correcting form validation or adding a data export. Avoid a large rewrite as your first test. Check the current branch, uncommitted changes and existing tests so you can compare the project before and after the tool's edits.

Provide enough context, not everything

Explain the goal, behavior that must stay intact and how you will verify the result. Let the assistant read relevant code first. Do not supply entire credential files, customer databases or unrelated material. On a cloud development platform, check who can access the project and runtime.

Review the change, not just the demo

Cursor and GitHub Copilot can help change code; Replit and v0 can also build prototypes. Whichever interface you choose, read the diff. Pay particular attention to permissions, error states, validation and added dependencies. A successful screen demo does not establish backend data security.

Run meaningful verification

Use the project's existing tests, then operate the affected workflow. For duplicate submission bugs, actually click repeatedly and reload. For permission changes, test different roles. Keep test data separate from production data so verification does not pollute operating content.

Include maintenance costs

Record the time spent, manual corrections, model usage and whether you can understand the code afterward. For local models, consider hardware and model licenses too. Prove that one small workflow remains maintainable before expanding what the agent can do.
